Genre : Cantata
Comment : Ich steh mit einam Fuss im Grabe (I
stand with one foot in the grave) / / Cantata 156 / / Third Sunday after
Epiphany / Epistle: Romans xii. 17-21 (Overcome evil with good) / Gospel:
Matthew viii. 1-13 (The cleansing of the leper) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: /
Rating: 2+ / / ….Soon falls my weary corpse therein. This cantata probably gets
the prize for the most outlandish title from our modern point of view! (But BWV
199 is a strong competitor). So it seems even stranger, perhaps, that Bach chose
one of his most beautiful tunes to open the work. The opening sinfonia (and the
slow movement of the keyboard concerto BWV 1056) where you are most likely to
have heard this tune before, is probably adapted from a lost violin concerto.
Very, very beautiful in its present form where the oboe gets the melody. The
following tenor aria (with the stark words above) is overlaid by the soprano
intoning a chorale Do with me, God, according to Thy goodness. It's very
effective and helps to explain what this work is about: acceptance of our fate
and happiness in our (holy) destiny. There's a nice touch in the accompaniment,
if you like the morbid: A descending figure representing the descent into the
grave! A recitative follows, after which is an alto aria most notable for the
attractive oboe and violin accompaniment. (While we're spotting lost works: Is
this a remnant of a lost trio sonata?) The cantata is brought to a close by a
recitative followed by a straightforward chorale setting.

Comment : Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich
denn (I leave Thee not, except Thou bless me) / / Cantata 157 / / Purification
of the Blessed Virgin Mary / Epistle: Mal. iii. 1-4 (The Lord shall suddenly
come to His temple) / Gospel: Luke ii. 22-32 (Simeon prophesies of Christ) / /
SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 2+ / / The solo cantata BWV 157 was commissioned
as a memorial cantata for Johann von Ponickau, a privy councillor and
chamberlain at the Saxon court. The piece has only come down to us via a score
and set of parts copied by Penzel (a successor of Bach as Cantor of the Leipzig
Thomaskirche) and there are many discrepancies between them. Fortunately,
reconstruction is possible! / / The Cantata opens with a fine duet between
tenor and bass that is introduced with an equally fine and florid accompaniment
from flute, oboe and violin. The voices are in canon, perhaps reflecting the
words (from Genesis xxxxii. 24-30) that in scripture go on to relate the story
of Jacob wrestling with a stranger (canon = wrestling? Well, maybe it's a bit
far fetched!) The tenor aria is most notable for its oboe d'amore accompaniment
and the following recitative also has an attractive accompaniment. The fine bass
aria has a lovely part for the flute (so I am biased in its favour!) and breaks
into arioso near the end for dramatic effect before returning to its original
texture. The cantata ends with a straightforward chorale setting.

Comment : Der Friede sei mit dir (May peace be
unto you) / / Cantata 158 / / Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary /
Epistle: Malacai iii. 1-4 (The Lord shall suddenly come to His temple) / Gospel:
Luke ii. 22-32 (Simeon prophesies of Christ) / / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: /
Rating: 1 / / Blink and you'll miss it! At around twelve minutes long and with
only four movements (recitative, aria/chorale, recitative, chorale), BWV 158 is
thought to represent only a fragment of a larger work. Certainly, looking at the
form of other cantatas, one would at least expect another aria before the
closing chorale. If this hypothesis is true then it is a great shame since the
surviving movements are all excellent and hint at a masterpiece. The major part
of the cantata is taken up with a bass aria woven around a soprano chorale
accompanied by a beautiful, singing, violin accompaniment. Robertson suggests
comparison with Schlummert ein from the great BWV 82 and Schuhmacher (in the
Teldec series notes) suggests Erbarme dich from the St. Matthew Passion. Can I
say more in praise of this movement? The opening recitative includes arioso
sections of outstanding beauty and the second recitative is hardly less
impressive. The cantata finishes with the fifth verse of Luther's great hymn
Christ lag in Todesbanden.

(Come let us go up to Jerusalem) / / Cantata 159 / / Quinquagesima Sunday /
Epistle: 1 Corinthians xiii. (The praises of charity) / Gospel: Luke xviii. 31-
43 (We go up to Jerusalem) / / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 1 / / There is
a very intimate, personal feeling to this short cantata that means that it may
not immediately catch the attention. It is, however, very beautiful in its
intimacy. This is the story of the way of the cross told from the point of view
of the soul. / / The first movement is an arioso/recitative dialogue in which
the bass is a steadfast Jesus and the alto the hesitant soul. In the following
aria/chorale, in which the soprano sings the sixth verse of the chorale O Haupt
voll Blut und Wunden in broken lines, the alto soul gains strength of purpose,
singing around the lines of the chorale. After a recitative there is a very
gentle, very beautiful bass aria Es is vollbracht introduced by a plaintive oboe
figure. This may remind you of the alto aria of the same name from the St. John
Passion. The texture of the piece is very similar. The cantata ends with a
straightforward chorale setting.

Corinthians v. 7-8 (Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us) / Gospel: Mark

BWV 160 is now known to be by Telemann and has therefore been relegated to
Anhang III of the BWV. Fortunately, it's reappeared in the catalogue of
Telemann's works as TVWV 1:875. For a reference on the attribution, see Dürr,
Bach-Jahrbuch, 1951/2, 35ff. / / There is a currently available recording of
this solo tenor cantata by Peter Schreier on Philips 442 786-2. Listening to
this recording, I do find it hard to understand why it was ever attributed to
Bach! It is, however, a tuneful and attractive work and if you're interested in
the periphery of Bach's works it's well worth seeking out. The first aria is
introduced by an insistent ritornello and has a simple an attractive vocal line.
The second and third arias benefit from attractive violin accompaniments.
